In 2005, Australian scientists Barry Marshall and Robin Warren won a Nobel Prize for their milestone discovery: the bacterium Helicobacter pylori causes gastritis and peptic ulcers.
Today, approximately 60% of the global population carries this bacterium, with prevalence in China reaching 56% . Alarmingly, up to 80% infected individuals remain asymptomatic, unknowingly harboring a pathogen classified as a Group 1 carcinogen .
Recent research has revealed that the oral cavity serves as a critical reservoir for H. pylori. Viable bacteria can persist in dental plaque and root canals, and from there, continuously seed the stomach via swallowed saliva, contributing to reinfection rates of 13-18% after gastric treatment .
